Quale strumento meno attuale del liuto? Eppure Jozef Van Wissem, sopraffino esecutore e compositore olandese, riesce a svecchiare la tradizione rinascimentale e barocca di questo strumento innestando nei suoi dischi elementi di folk, minimalismo, manipolazioni elettroniche, improvvisazione, decostruzioni simmetriche e palindromiche, giochi di specchi. La sua musica non ha una semplice progressione lineare, ma piuttosto crea un flusso di suono che fa scivolare l'ascoltatore in una dimensione temporale altra. Il suo approccio unico, colto ma non convenzionale, gli permette altresì di cimentarsi con colonne sonore, insegnare composizione e improvvisazione, collaborare con successo tanto con Gary Lucas (chitarrista di Cpt. Beefheart) quanto con Tetuzi Akiyama, col piccolo genio del fingerpicking James Blackshaw quanto col maestro del suono industriale Maurizio Bianchi.
